Internship at Hiroshima ANA Hotel 広島全日空ホテル

it was a total of 13 days of work, 9am-5.30pm, at ANA hotel for mi and tsepeng. quite a routine life for us: morning woke up at 6.50am, changed, ate breakfast and left the dorm by 7.45am. walked to Yokogawa station to catch the 8.15am 電車(streetcar), alighted at Fukuro-Machi station, walked and signed in at ANA by abt 8.40am. then off to the lockers room to change into our uniforms. and v unenthusiatically =P, we bade farewell to each other as we entered the jimusho to our respective departments.

for mi, life with marketing dept wasn't too bad. they offten try to give mi different work to do and Tateishi-san often took mi ard with her ard the hotel. here's an outline of wat i've done:

- cut & laminate papers
such as various signs, menus, posters, etc, which r to be put up on display

- attended 勉強会 (study meeting)
it's some sorta lecture held occasionally to increase employees' knowledge. the one i attended was abt wine.

- English translation
initially i was really happy to help translate the Japanese documents into English, thinking tt my command of English is put into gd use here. alas, i found out by accident tt one of the articles actually has an English version to it already! felt so demoralised... tt they r only finding ways to entertain mi. but then, i came to appreciate their goodwill also, instead of letting mi sit there with nothing to do. and all the frequent checking up of words helped to improve my Japanese too.

- attended Friday morning meeting
every Friday morning, there's a meeting for all department heads to come together. tsepeng and i got to sit in once... but we couldn't understand anything and ended up dozing off! =P

- behind the glorious banquet scene
Tateishi-san showed mi to the kitchens where they prepare banquet. so interesting! there r lots and lots of utensils of various shapes and sizes. got to see chefs at work too. the banquet rooms r so grand and beautiful. so many banquets in a day... i really marvel at how they manage to do so many things!

- typing in Japanese
i was often asked to help typed out stuffs, such as letters, customers survey forms, posters etc. and they wld always take the effort to write out all the furigana (the pronounciation) on top of the kanji (chinese characters) for mi!

- Photography session
father's day was coming and the hotel has a special cake for the event. so i witnessed how Tateishi-san and Somyo-buchou took pics of the cake.

- Put up posters ard the hotel
on 31/5, i followed Tateishi-san ard the hotel, replacing all the posters for May promotions to those of June.

- Sort out staff expenses form
whenever an ANA staff spent inside the hotel, they r entitled to some sorta claim or points. mi helped to sort out all the forms in May by dept and name, calculated the total and keyed the amount into an excel sheet.

- Throw rubbish
at abt 5pm everyday, Tateishi-san wld go ard the office, emptying all the wastepaper baskets. i often helped out with her and take the rubbish down to the rubbish chute which is v smelly! =P

- Pick out lucky winners
there was some contest where 2 lucky winners will get to enjoy a free stay in ANA hotel. among the hundreds of postcards received, i had to pick out 2 winners. hee~ so fun! many of the postcards r nicely decorated and filled with words abt how they really wish to win the free hotel stay. the hopes of so many ppl, all in my hands! haha... so i picked out 2 postcards which i felt were the most sincere.

- Shredding
after getting the lucky winners, i gotta shred all the postcards away. my first time using a shredder.

- Try out sports facilities
once, i dozed off while typing and so Tateishi-san brought mi to visit the in-house gym. was quite surprised to see tt most of the ppl making use of the gym there r senior citizens! so unlike Singapore sia. also saw their indoor swimming pool. really marvelled at the so many different facilities located inside one hotel!

- Design coupon
last week of internship, Tateishi-san let mi try out one of the main job of marketing dept, i.e. design! got to use Adobe Photoshop on a MAC machine, and a Japanese one some more. here's the coupon i designed... which i, as well as the whole dept, was really satisfied with! *beams*

- Handicap and Elderly hands-on experience
there was this seminar organised for staff to experience how it feels like to be hanicapped or elder. Tateishi-san brought mi to witness it. so interesting... the service staff all had to dress up as either a handicap or elderly. this hands-on experience is to allow staff to understand the needs of these ppl better and hence able to provide better service for them.

okie... looks like i got to try out lotsa various jobs during my short stay in ANA hotel sia. but how come i always felt so sleepy and bored inside the office?? =P maybe it's the environment ba... no windows one, juz an enclosed place with lotsa desks and documents and ppl working furiously away.

anyway, some other things abt the days in ANA...
- every morning at 9am b4 work commences, there wld be a morning briefing to inform everyone abt the day's events. even the schedule of rival hotels will be reported too!
- whenever we see a fellow colleague somewhere, muz say "お疲れ様です" which means "It's been tiring for u". juz some manners. if see a hotel guest, muz say "いらっしゃいませ" which means "Welcome".
- in the girls locker room, everyone juz strip and change there one. but conservative mi wld always hide behind the curtain at the basin. =P
- the canteen serves 2 different dishes everyday, and they rarely repeat. after buying the 260yen 定食券 from the machine, can choose the set tt we wan to eat. rice and green tea r self-service and unlimited.
- the staff toilet is super smelly with ppl always smoking inside. *faint*

on the whole, i think i did manage to try out and learn quite many things in ANA, altho most of the time i was really bored and sleepy. =Pp but the ppl there were really nice to us! really thank all my wonderful colleagues at ANA hotel for making this internship such a memorable and fruitful one!
