finally, the official start of the internship, the main core of this Hiroshima trip. Was so nervous and worried abt it. the nite b4, the 7 of us were diligently memorising all the respectful statements we’ve learnt at HIP. dunno if will really get to use those sentences. mi & tsepeng hv been wondering abt wat kinda jobs we’ll get in ANA… front desk receptionist? chambermaids? or toilet-cleaners? Haha =P
as instructed, we looked for Kawasaki-manager when we got to the hotel at 9am. he brought us up to the jimusho (office) on the 2nd level, where we met Ikeda-general-manager. Nx, a sweet lady brought us to the girls’ locker room and gave us our uniforms. Hee~ the uniform looks quite cool sia… but it’s v hot and uncomfortable wearing it! =P then back to the manager, who brought us to greet all the various dept (lotsa “doozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu”) and gave us a tour of the hotel (in the best English he could manage).
abt 11am, we were brought back to the jimusho for real work to begin. i was so scared when tsepeng left for her banquet reservation dept and I was sent to the marketing dept. I was all on my own now!
but hee… looks like mi not the only nervous soul in fact. in the marketing dept, Tsuga-san (manager) assigned Tateishi-san to look after mi. Tateishi-san is a really cute and sweet looking 23-yr-old girl. She kept going “Dou shiyou? dou shiyou?” (“wat shld I do?”) apparently, she was juz as nervous as I was abt how we would communicate! so yup, she began talking to mi v slowly in simple Japanese. Realising tt I could actually understand wat she said, I gained confidence and began to open up and spoke more Japanese with her. Of cos there were times when I didn’t know the word she said, and tt’s when our jisho (dictionary) came in good use. Hee~
lunchtime came! we bought the set lunch in the shokudo (canteen) at 260 yen, which consisted of a main dish (pork for tt day), pickled vege, miso soup, green tea & rice. Quite a cheap meal considering in Japan! Yeah~ at least we wun get malnourished by our daily instant ramen anymore. =P
after lunch, my job began! i was told tt I wld be helping to do some English translation for their website, and also do some stuff on the Mac machine later in the week. But for the moment, my job is…. Cutting papers and laminating them!! Yup, dun forget mi in the marketing dept, so need to do lotsa those decorative banners and posters. It is juz like doing POP in sony gallery!
in between cutting papers, a few a-lil-more-interesting events tt happened: Tateishi-san bringing mi to the post office nearby to send some letters, Somyo-bucho educating mi abt Japanese working system, and Tsuga-san & Tateishi-san bringing mi up to the Sky Beer Restaurant which was still under renovation and due to open on the 1st of June. This restaurant is located on the rooftop of our 22-storey high hotel. Standing there, I was able to get a panoramic view of the whole Hiroshima City. It was simply beautiful! I was also glad to know tt those signboards tt I’ve been cutting and laminating will be placed in this restaurant. Gave mi motivation to get on with this brainless job! =P
we finally ended the first day of work at 5.30pm. back in the dorm, everyone was excitedly sharing wat they’ve done in the first day of internship. Hee… so fun to hear abt one another’s experience! lucky ppl like kaisi got to end work at like 4pm, while rachel & alice went sight-seeing. unlucky souls like sharon got stuck with doing shredding, sook whai doing stamping, and tsepeng peeling namecards for the whole day. Kajiwara-san was also in the dining room with us to share our ramblings of the day. So nice to live together like a whole big family!
