shanjae's kawaii bento #1

I started taking an interest in kawaii bentos, or more correctly known as キャラ弁 (pronounced as "kyara ben", which is short for "character bento") about 2 years ago. However, it wasn't until I got to Shinjo last year when I started trying my hands at making it myself. While most of my friends have already seen my creations on Facebook, I have decided to share more details about my bento-making adventures in this blog!

First of all, here's showing my bento tools collection!

Most of them are from Daiso
but the 2 onigiri cases are from Loft
(and my collection has grown even bigger by now actually!)

30th June 2010 - my 1st ever attempt at キャラ弁!

Consisting of:
2 onigiri (rice ball), mixed with salmon flakes & shaped using a triangular mould
sliced kyuuri (japanese cucumber) with mayonnaise
boiled octopus sausage, with black sesame seeds as eyes
random frozen foodstuff (i was lazy =P)

As you can see, my first attempt wasn't very well done. A basic rule of Japanese bento is that you are not supposed to have any space left, so I 適当に (anyhow) added mayonnaise to cover that hole between the 2 onigiris right in the centre. =Pp

Ok, that's it for today. Will share more of my bentos again!

@Shou-chan
Hee... thanks! Sure, I still have quite a number of bento pics to show! ^^

@Kelly
Yup I learnt that from a random bento-making website. Haha~ The onigiri looks a lot more appetizing in this way, isn't it? ;)

That's a *first* attempt!!?? That's awesome! ^^
I love looking at (And eating!) kyara-ben but... I'm just too lazy to make it, haha! These days I don't get much opportunity to make bentos anyway since I get lunch at work, but I still enjoy looking (and if anyone's offering...eating!)! Looking forward to seeing what else you've made. ^^

Black sesame seeds as eyes!!
Wow! That's so cute! :D
What about filling the empty space with cauliflower or broccoli?
This is only my idea, I've never made Chara-ben ever before and as I work from home, I won't need to make it. ^^; It must be fun if you can show off kawaii bento to your co-workers or friends. ^^

@Ri
Thanks for the compliment! I always make my own lunch in order to save money but usually they aren't so nicely done cos I'm lazy too. =P Good for you that you get lunch at work!!

@kirin
Hee~ Thank you! Yes I later found out that broccoli is a great ingredient for filling up the spaces in bento. ;) Wow, how nice that you are able to work from home! I hope to find such a job too!
